A Writer's Passion...And Her Friend

We’ve been together eleven years, two months; and I can’t imagine life without him. From the start, he showed interest in my work and spent time in my office. In short order, I knew…we were on to something.

When we met, I was a recipe for loneliness: in a strange land, two hundred miles from family and friends, and struggling to make it as a writer. My friend was a gift from God, and he sealed a gap in my heart.

While writing Place of Sage, money was tight and nerves were worse. On the rough days, my (then) teenagers would nod at each other, and dash for the door. But my friend didn’t scare easily. As paper, files, and even books sailed across the room, he’d give me that “I know” look, and coax me out for a hike. Then upon our return, I’d salvage the goods and start writing again.

He was a writer’s perfect friend; even better than a good chair and fat gel pens. And to top it off, he never complained when dinner was late.

Naturally, he became a character in the story. And when Place of Sage was finished, a reporter came to our home for an author profile. This was one of those moments I’d waited twenty years for. And boy was I nervous—especially about the photo. So my friend posed with me.

When the paper came out, comments ranged from, “I’m looking forward to your book, but I really liked the picture of your dog!” to “I read about you in the paper—your dog sure is cute!” Granted, he did help. And he still does.

I can’t imagine writing without Dion, my famous Place of Sage Dog. What about you? Do you have a friend like this?
